Alex Thomen is a pianist, producer, composer, and educator currently based in Denver, Colorado. His work spans a wide range of genres and formats—from solo piano and rock bands to cinematic orchestral scores and full symphonic arrangements. With a background in rock, classical, and jazz, Thomen’s music blends epic orchestration, solo piano, and film trailer styles, often infused with the melodic hooks and energy of piano-driven pop and rock. He has scored for film, written for numerous cinematic music libraries, and earned television placements on shows such as Australian Idol and Australian Survivor. His commissioned work “I Married Adventure” was premiered by Royster Middle School at the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) conference. Originally from Kansas, Thomen spent several years working in and out of studios in Nashville, Tennessee, before relocating to Denver.

Thomen holds a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Composition from Kansas State University and a Master’s in Commercial Music Composition and Arranging. He is an Avid Certified Instructor of Pro Tools and a Master Instructor of Sibelius. He authored Fundamentals of Notation with Sibelius textbook, a key resource for Avid’s official certification program. In addition, Thomen is a contributing author for Avid’s newest Pro Tools curricula. Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor and Program Director of Recording Arts at the University of Colorado Denver, where he oversees curriculum development and teaches courses in audio post-production, surround sound, and Pro Tools certification. Whether composing, producing, or teaching, Thomen brings a deep commitment to creativity, technical excellence, and music industry advancement.
